A Question for Knitters

So this random sort of thought just occurred to me. It's really a rather typical type of thing for my rarely settled brain to dwell on but since I'm trying desperately to stay awake (killer allergies are attacking) I thought I'd post the question here.

Say you had to evacuate... doesn't matter why... suppose it's imminent flooding or forest fires. Now, assuming that you had all your important people, pets, photos, and papers secured, which you would grab if you then had to make a choice between your finished knits and your stash?

I knew immediately which I would take... my stash. Why? Because it represents new life, new possibilities. It can become something. And what if I can't afford to buy more yarn after the disaster? I would never be content just wearing the stuff I'd already knit. Hmmmm...

So humor me... what would you take?

Interestingly enough, I was thinking about this the other night. I knew in an instant I'd grab my spinning wheel and my spinning fiber.

Yarn, all the way!

I'd take one afghan and then have fun using the insurance money to try new fun yarns.

Assuming all the "important stuff" is packed.....definitely the stash. Same reasons as yours too :-)

Stash all the way! :0)

Stash totally. Why would I want my finished knits which have mistakes when my stash is still perfect? I think I must have subconsciously planned for this when I organized my stash. My most beloved skeins are in an easy access bin and as the skeins get less important, they are stowed further away.

Having evacuated three times in the past five years, I can tell you with certainty that I would take the "good" yarn, the "good" fiber, my needle bag, all current projects, and my wheel. I now store all the good yarn and fiber separately, just in case I need to leave in a hurry again. One of my knitting friends lost her house in last year's firestorms and didn't even have time to grab a change of clothes. She lost decades of stash, books, patterns, needles, everything. It was awful. Do you know how hard it is to convince the insurance company of the true value of your stash?

I would take some of both I think. The shawl I made is too good to leave behind and those baby socks my kids wore and the icelandic I made my husband. There are some knits I wold grab --- but my needles and the yarn in my room would have to come too.

Stash.

I'd grab my pets, wedding video, current knitting, my Bible, some stash. But in that situation I don't know if I'd even be thinking about knitting.

I'd grab my Gram's knitting. The things she knit I can't replace. I'll assume that I could always buy more yarn. And my stash isn't as big as some.

Stash!!! It represents so much future potential and also the feelings that I had at the moment I looked at it and loved it enough to buy it, how could I not take it.

Let's hope we never have to make this decision!

We had to evacuate 4 years ago, when our house caught fire. Didn't have a chance to grab anything- no clothes, no photos, no books, no stash- I'm still working on rebuilding my stash(both yarn and fabrics) and still haven't gotten a new sewingmachine! If I had time, I would take needles and wheels- because it is just too much to lose.(I didn't do any knitting/crocheting for at least half a year after the fire, but finally a friend brought me some yarn and needles and a couple of dolls clothes patterns-bless her!)
