FO: For Better or Worse

I need to start out by noting that I am quite limited in the area of available and willing photographers. I have 5 boys who can't keep their grubby hands off my camera until I actually want them to use it. Then they whimper and moan while I attempt to motivate them all of the usual (yet useless) motherly lines like, "All the driving around I do for you and you can't give me a few minutes for a decent picture??" But they are immune to such prattle and find the disgrace of standing in the front yard taking pictures of their mother too much to bear.

Anway... We'll start with this washed out photo of my Shetland Triangle Shawl.

Shetland Triangle Shawl

Actually, I have no idea how to wear a shawl and am not sure better lighting would make any difference. (But I do think some lipstick would be good here.)

I'm not sure if it's the improved lighting or the missing model that makes this photo so much more appealing. Either way, whether I wear it or not, I loved knitting it and am crazy about the finished shawl.

Next up is Talia from the Spring Knitty. This is a great pattern and fun to knit.

Talia

Unfortunately, my inability (or unwillingness) to measure properly resulted in shoulder straps that were too long.

Talia

I could fix this by frogging all the garter edging around the armholes and neckline (choke), then unseaming the shoulders and frogging back a few rows, but... I also seem to have strayed and ignored the obvious gauge issue that was occurring as I knit with rapid clicks.

Talia

Even if I fixed it, buttons ain't gonna hold this puppy together. I actually like the vest enough to put some more effort into it but I think my best bet is to start from scratch. I feel much sadder about this now that I've seen the pictures. I must hide it again quickly.

The yarn is Malabrigo Worsted in "Pigeon".

What have I learned?
(1) I love to knit shawls and I don't have to worry about them fitting.
(2) It's really worth the time to slip a one-piece knit off the circulars onto some waste yarn to double check your fit.

The shawl is lovely. And I love what the Harlot says about shawls. You can leave it lying on your couch...to wrap around your shoulders when it's a bit chilly and no one thinks you're a slob. You can't leave a sweater lying around and have people think the same. This shawl could be "art". Even if you don't wear it, it will look good as home accessory.

And the vest...so cute. Too bad about the size. Maybe you could gift it to your sister/SIL that fit your Mr. Greenjeans...or whatever that pattern name is.

I have a very similar opinion about shawls. They look gorgeous...until I put them on. Then I don't know what to do with them. But yours is absolutely stunning...and for what it's worth, I think it looks great on you!

I will say your experience with Talia has encouraged me to suck it up and frog mine. I'm only a few rows into the lace pattern at the bottom, and just figured out a serious gauge problem. Thanks for the lesson. And for what it's worth, yours looks amazing from the back! The potential is definitely there!!

I don't know how to wear shawls, either, which is why I knit lace shrugs. But I was recently the recipient of a gorgeous shawl pin, so I'm going to give the shawl concept another try.

I love, love, love the vest! And, as I am both tall and skinny, it would probably fit me perfectly. Just sayin'.

The shawl is lovely!
The ves is next on my t-knit list! I bought black yarn, but had a shawl to finish first... I'll keep your notes on it in mind though. I'm tall-but not so skinny:-)-so I'm planning on lengtening it a bit below waistline.
I want to start knitting it right away! Unfortunately there's an inspector arriving in 5 minutes for the yearly check on our farm:-(sigh...

I love your shawl AND the Talia - beautiful! I've almost sworn off lace knitting .... and then another pretty pattern comes along that entices me. :-)

I still really love the Talia even if it's a little roomy! I can't wait to make one for myself. I think you carry off the shawl perfectly. You wear it well and it's lovely!

The shawl is perfect! I'm just imagining how wonderful it feels knit up in that yarn.

Poor Talia. It looks great though. You knit that up so quickly that it wouldn't take you hardly any time at all to re-knit it. Just sayin.

Lovely FOs! Too bad about the vest - I think your first idea sounds good - rip out the arm edging and shoulders and knit them smaller.. Easier than starting over! Good luck deciding what to do :)
